The TMJ, also known as the temporomandibular joint, is composed of bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and nerves. When one or more of these structures is affected by an improper bite, trauma, arthritis, or general wear and tear, then it is known as temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMJ.
The TMJ treatment that we provide is a custom-made oral appliance made from hard plastic and designed to fit over your top or bottom teeth. When you wear the appliance, it adjusts your jaw into the proper position to relieve stress on the joint and alleviate TMJ symptoms. In most cases, you can expect to wear your appliance only at night.
Am I a candidate for TMJ treatment?
You may be a candidate for TMJ treatment if you are experiencing symptoms of TMJ, such as:
- Pain or soreness of the jaw joint
- Tingling in the ear or neck
- Tension headaches
- Tenderness of the muscles on either side of your face
- Clicking or popping sounds when opening/closing your jaw
- Tingling or numbness of the lips, chin, and cheek
- A change in your bite (for example…your teeth might not touch when you close your mouth)
- Facial muscle fatigue
- Earaches
What should I expect during my TMD treatment appointment?
If you are experiencing TMJ symptoms, then your TMJ treatment appointment will consist primarily of a thorough examination of your jaw and face to determine the cause of TMJ. We may also take x-rays to assess internal damage. After diagnosing TMJ, a dental impression will be taken of your mouth so that a dental lab can produce a perfectly-fitted oral appliance.
In most cases, it takes up to two weeks to custom-make TMJ oral appliances. Once you have your appliance, we will check the fit and make minor adjustments as needed. You will start wearing your oral TMJ appliance every night from that point on. In some cases, future appointments may be needed to make adjustments.
